The DZPG research programme comprises four interconnected core research domains:
These core research domains are complemented by three cross-cutting flagship projects:
During the expansion phase (2025-2030), these priorities will be further developed through shared research infrastructures, harmonized datasets, and translational studies to accelerate the implementation of research findings into clinical practice.
Core Research Domain I
(Leads: Bochum, Munich)
aims to improve understanding of the causes and trajectories of mental health conditions, co-occurring physical health conditions, and processes that promote mental health across the lifespan. The goal is to identify factors that support resilience and recovery.
The domain consists of three research clusters:
I.1 Early Adversity and Trauma
Example projects: BO1, MUC1, MA1, TÜ6, and JE6
I.2 Biopsychosocial Transmission of Mental Health Conditions Across Generations
Example projects: BO3, MA3, MUC5, and TÜ4
I.3 Biopsychosocial Trajectories of Mental and Physical Health Across the Lifespan
Example projects: BE1, BO2, JE4, MA2, MUC2, MUC3, and TÜ5
Core Research Domain II
(Leads: Tübingen, Jena)
aims to maximize the practical impact of research for people receiving care by accelerating the translation of scientific findings into clinical practice. It closely integrates biopsychosocial research from Core Research Domain I with the development of more precise and personalized treatment approaches.
The domain consists of three research clusters:
II.1 Personalized Digital and Neuromodulation-Based Interventions
Example projects: TÜ1, JE3, BO3, MA3, and MUC6
II.2 Personalized Pharmacological and Psychological Treatments
Example projects: JE7, BE2, MA4, MUC7, and TÜ2
II.3 Targeted Stepped Care Strategies for Mental Health
Example projects: BO5, JE2, MA4, and TÜ1
Core Research Domain III
(Leads: Berlin, Mannheim)
completes the translational research cycle by facilitating the implementation of targeted interventions based on individual trajectories within people's everyday environments. It extends the perspective of Core Research Domains I and II beyond biomedical research to include social and environmental contexts.
The domain consists of three research clusters:
III.1 Population-Based Interventions
Example projects: BE3, BO5, and MUC4
III.2 Recovery: Mechanisms, Social Factors, and Treatment Approaches
Example projects: BE4, BO1, and MA5
III.3 Diversity, Social Inclusion, and Mental Health: Addressing Stigma and Discrimination
Example projects: BE5, MA6, and MUC7
Core Research Domain IV
brings together visionary research on emerging topics and supports collaborative projects across DZPG sites. It enables an agile response to developments of high societal relevance while generating new approaches for prevention, treatment, participation, and translation into practice.
During the initial development phase, the primary focus was on establishing the foundations for early detection and prevention. In the expansion phase, the emphasis shifts to advancing these approaches, strengthening shared research infrastructures, addressing emerging research questions with agility, and accelerating translation into clinical care.
