Two million euros for groundbreaking research on loneliness

Prof. Dr. Maike Luhmann, a scientific member of the DZPG Bochum-Marburg site, has been awarded a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). Her project "Loneliness Across Time and Space", LOTIS for short, will be funded with around two million euros over five years.

What is the relationship between places and loneliness? The Professor of Psychological Methodology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum will investigate this question as part of her research project. The aim is to use the findings to develop effective interventions against loneliness.

The project is based on a new theoretical model that links a person's loneliness with their subjective perception of the places where they usually spend time. It assumes that the perception of places is influenced by their objective characteristics and the person's characteristics. How often, for how long, and in what order the person visits certain places could also play a role.

The European Research Council (ERC) supports outstanding researchers of all nationalities in Europe. Researchers who completed their doctorate seven to twelve years ago can apply for ERC Consolidator Grants, which can provide funding of up to two million euros over a maximum period of five years.
