These incidents—including the posting of images of individual scientists on social media accompanied by openly threatening or aggressive comments—are unacceptable. They endanger the physical and psychological well-being of those affected, as well as the open, evidence-based exchange that is essential for scientific progress.
The DZPG is committed to promoting the mental health of all individuals. This includes discussing research findings even in challenging or polarized contexts. Science has the responsibility to communicate in a nuanced, transparent, and evidence-based manner—regardless of whether the results are welcomed, uncomfortable, or controversial in society or in certain public spheres.
Researchers are obliged to contribute their findings where they are necessary for the welfare of patients and where they help to facilitate a factual and objective discussion of complex issues. Responding to such efforts with harassment and threats underscores the urgent need for such rational discourse.
The DZPG firmly stands with all scientists who, like the members targeted here, dedicate themselves on the basis of evidence to the care and well-being of patients. Open, respectful, and fact-based discussion is essential—for science and for society as a whole.
