Silvia Schneider receives Diotima Honorary award

Prof. Dr. Silvia Schneider, coordinator of the Bochum-Marburg partner site of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG), was honored with the Diotima Honorary Award of the German Psychotherapy Association in Berlin on Thursday, November 14, 2024. The Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists (BPtK) recognized her commitment to improving psychotherapeutic care for children and adolescents.

Following academic positions in Marburg, Berlin, Dresden, and Basel, Silvia Schneider has been a professor of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology at Ruhr University Bochum since 2010. In 2012, she also became the director of the university’s Research and Treatment Center for Mental Health (FBZ) and has coordinated the Bochum-Marburg branch of the DZPG since 2021.

"Prof. Dr. Silvia Schneider has made significant contributions to the implementation and advancement of evidence-based child and adolescent psychotherapy in mental health care," stated Dr. Andrea Benecke, President of the BPtK, during her laudatory speech. "The fact that clinical child and adolescent psychology is now an integral part of university education is largely due to her efforts."

Amid rising mental health challenges among children and adolescents, Silvia Schneider serves as a vital voice and driving force for positive change, Benecke added. Her contributions to research and treatment have enriched scientific discourse and significantly improved the lives of young people. One example is the “Families Under Pressure” initiative, which Schneider launched during the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with King’s College London. Furthermore, thanks to her efforts, a Children's Council for Mental Health was established at the Bochum-Marburg DZPG partner site.

According to the BPtK, the Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists represents the interests of around 64,000 psychotherapists, psychological psychotherapists, and child and adolescent psychotherapists in Germany. Since 2009, the Diotima Honorary Award has recognized individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the care of people with mental illnesses or demonstrated outstanding professional or scientific commitment.
