SCIENTIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GREATER CHILD PROTECTION ONLINE
The aim of the committee is to develop evidence-based recommendations on how children and adolescents in Europe can be better protected in digital environments. Topics under discussion include social media, online gaming, artificial intelligence, and the responsibilities of platform operators. The possibility of harmonized age restrictions for access to social media platforms is also on the agenda.
The group brings together experts from neuroscience, psychology, psychopathology, computer science, and law, complemented by perspectives from media education and children's rights advocacy. Prof. Fegert places particular emphasis on involving young people themselves: youth representatives will actively participate in the discussions.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO BE DELIVERED BY SUMMER 2026
The committee began its work in early March 2026 and will hold several meetings over the coming months. Its recommendations are expected to be submitted to the President of the European Commission by summer 2026 and will serve as the foundation for a European framework on child safety in digital environments.
The appointment highlights the international relevance of the expertise brought together within DZPG, particularly in the field of child and adolescent mental health.
