German Science and Humanities Council approves “SysBrain” research building in Jena

During its spring meeting, the German Science and Humanities Council recommended funding for the “SysBrain” research building project at Jena University Hospital. Prof. Dr. Martin Walter, Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Jena University Hospital and site spokesperson for the Halle–Jena–Magdeburg partner site of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG), serves as spokesperson for the project. The German federal government and the Free State of Thuringia will each cover half of the total costs of approximately €70 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion planned for 2031.

“SysBrain” will establish a new research facility in Jena dedicated to the study of mental health and neuropsychiatric disorders. The “Center for Systemic Regulation of Brain Circuits and Social Behavior” will investigate the interactions between brain networks, physiological processes, and social environmental factors. The central focus is to understand how these factors contribute to maintaining mental health or are involved in the development and progression of mental illnesses. “SysBrain creates a crucial foundation for further expanding our mental health research in Jena and extending it to the interplay of physical and social factors,” says Prof. Dr. Martin Walter.

The new research building is planned for the Mental Health Campus in the Landgrafen area and will provide approximately 2,700 square meters of research space. State-of-the-art research infrastructures and technologies are planned to bring together existing and new interdisciplinary research groups. The goal is to strengthen translational and interdisciplinary research in the field of mental health over the long term.
